The short answer
A mother-of-the-bride gown should complement the bride without competing with her: usually a long, modest gown in a soft or jewel tone, with embroidery that echoes the bridal look. We design it alongside the bride's wardrobe and fit it over two to three fittings. Start three to four months before the wedding.
What should the mother of the bride wear?
A long gown with sleeves is the safe choice for most UAE weddings, in a colour that sits well beside the bride's: champagne, rose gold, dusty blue, emerald or deep burgundy. Avoid white and ivory. Embroidery can echo a motif from the bridal gown, which ties the family photographs together.
How do you design for comfort?
Mothers are on their feet for hours, greeting guests. We use soft linings, structured but flexible bodices and sleeves with room to move. Summer weddings need breathable fabric: the National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C in August 2025 [source].
Tourism continues to be a key driver of economic diversification.
What about the groom's mother?
We design for both mothers, often in coordinated but different colours so neither outfit outshines the other. Tell us about both families' plans and we will suggest a palette.
How far ahead should I start?
Three to four months before the wedding, once the bride's colours are decided. Weddings in the UAE draw families from far away; Abu Dhabi's civil court served clients from around 120 nationalities in 2025 [source], and we schedule fittings around travel.
Which colours suit which wedding?
| Wedding | Colours that work | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Emirati and Gulf | Champagne, gold, emerald, navy, burgundy | White, ivory |
| South Asian | Teal, fuchsia, gold, peach, deep green | Red, if the bride wears red |
| International or civil | Dusty blue, rose, silver, sage | White, ivory, all black |
Which silhouette works best?
A-line and soft column gowns are comfortable for long evenings and flatter most figures. A structured inner bodice gives support without a corset. Sleeves can be sheer lace or chiffon for lightness. We adjust the design after the toile fitting, so the final gown feels as good as it looks.
What about women-only celebrations?
At an Emirati or Gulf women's celebration, the bride's mother is one of the most photographed guests. A more open, richly embroidered gown can be worn inside with a matching abaya or cape for arrival. Dubai's event calendar is full: the city welcomed 19.59 million international overnight visitors in 2025 [source], and hotel ballrooms book early, so start once the venue is confirmed.
How many fittings will she need?
Usually a toile fitting and one or two fittings in the final fabric. We schedule the last fitting a week or two before the wedding, after the bride's final fitting, so any last colour or accessory decisions can be matched.
Can the gown be worn again?
Yes, and we design for it. A gown in a jewel tone with removable embroidered sleeves or a separate cape can return for Eid dinners, family weddings and formal events. Tell us which future occasions you have in mind and we will design the pieces to work apart as well as together.
What should she bring to the consultation?
Photographs of the bride's chosen look or fabric samples if available, the wedding venue, the shoes she plans to wear and any jewellery she will wear on the night. A few photographs of gowns she has felt good in before also help us understand her preferences quickly.
How do we coordinate with the bride's look?
We start from the bride's palette and embroidery, then choose one shared element for the mother's gown, such as the same metal tone, a related flower motif, or matching edging on a cape. This links the two looks in photographs without copying the bridal gown. If the bride's gown is made elsewhere, bring a photograph and a fabric sample if possible.
Frequently asked questions
Should the mother of the bride match the bride?
Complement rather than match. A shared embroidery motif or metal tone works better than the same colour.
Can you make an abaya to go over the gown?
Yes. We design matching abayas and capes for arrival at women-only celebrations.
How many fittings are needed?
Usually two to three.
