South Asian wedding outfits: mehndi, nikkah, baraat and walima

The short answer

Pakistani and Indian weddings in the UAE usually have three to five events, each with its own look: a bright, playful outfit for the mehndi, a soft pastel or ivory look for the nikkah, a red or deep-toned bridal outfit for the baraat, and an elegant gown for the walima. Plan the full wardrobe six to nine months ahead.

Which events need their own outfit?

A typical South Asian wedding in the UAE includes the mehndi, the nikkah or religious ceremony, the baraat or main wedding day, and the walima reception. Many families add a dholki or sangeet. The UAE is home to one of the world's most international populations, 11.3 million residents at the end of 2024 [source], and South Asian weddings here often blend family traditions from several countries.

What does the bride wear at each event?

Common bridal looks by event
EventTypical lookColours
MehndiLehenga, sharara or gharara with light embroideryYellow, green, orange, multicolour
NikkahSoft lehenga, long shirt or gown with a dupattaIvory, pastel, blush
BaraatHeavily embroidered lehenga or gownRed, maroon, deep jewel tones
WalimaElegant gown or lighter lehengaSilver, champagne, pastels

These are traditions, not rules. Many brides now choose a gown for the walima and a lehenga for the baraat.

How do you work with heavy embroidery in the heat?

Bridal lehengas can be very heavy. We build them on a light, breathable base and place embroidery where it shows in photographs, so the outfit stays wearable for a long evening. Summer weddings deserve extra care: the National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C in Al Ain in August 2025 [source]. Our fabric guide explains what works.

Can you design outfits for the whole family?

Yes. We design coordinated looks for mothers, sisters and bridesmaids, matched by colour or embroidery motif. Family orders need extra time, so start early. Abu Dhabi's civil court alone served clients from around 120 nationalities in 2025 [source], and many families arrive from abroad for the celebrations, so we plan fittings around travel dates.

How far ahead should I start?

Six to nine months for the main bridal outfit, three to four months for the other events. Use the bridal timeline planner to see the dates for your wedding.

How do you balance tradition and a modern look?

Many brides want the richness of a traditional bridal outfit with a cleaner, contemporary cut. Common approaches are a fitted gown silhouette with traditional embroidery, a lehenga in an unexpected colour such as champagne or sage, or a modern blouse cut with a classic skirt. We sketch two or three directions at the consultation so you can compare.

How is the dupatta planned?

The dupatta frames the bride in most photographs. We plan its length, border embroidery and how it will be pinned: over the head for the nikkah, draped across the shoulders for the baraat, or replaced by a cape for a modern walima look. A lighter net or organza dupatta keeps the outfit wearable.

Which fabrics suit a mehndi in the UAE?

Mehndi events are often outdoors or in tents. Light cotton silk, chiffon and georgette keep you cool, and shorter hems avoid the ground. Save velvet and heavy brocade for winter evening events. Heat is the main factor: the National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C in Al Ain in August 2025 [source].

How do you plan outfits for a destination family?

Many South Asian families in the UAE fly relatives in for the wedding. We can take the bride's measurements early, cut the toile, and schedule the final fittings in the two or three weeks before the first event. Relatives abroad can send measurements and a short video so we can prepare their pieces in advance.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear a gown instead of a lehenga for the walima?
